Community Chalkboard

Upon unanimous approval by City Council in early 2021, The Bridge (parent organization to the Charlottesville Mural Project) has become the owner and caretaker of the Community Chalkboard. We have accepted stewardship duties, including repair, maintenance, and programming efforts. We look forward to continuing to host compelling programs centered around the landmark We’re celebrating a new chapter for the renown public landmark in the heart of town by rededicating the Community Chalkboard as an inclusive, inviting tribute to creative expression and public engagement. HISTORY: The Community Chalkboard, a 60’ long slate installation was originally commissioned by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. It was designed by Peter O’Shea and Robert Winstead. since 2006, The Community Chalkboard has stood outside of Charlottesville’s City Hall as a celebration of free expression and a destination for art installations, impromptu orations, and spontaneous performance.
